You may require one-to-one tuition for your primary aged child for a range of reasons: SEN, learning difficulties including dyslexia, spelling or handwriting needs, reading support or much more including general English support. During the primary years, this is when the most learning takes place and when you as a parent can see the most change. However, when your child at this age is struggling, it is hard to know the best ways how to support their progress.

At primary age, it is best to have in person one-to-one support to really help their learning needs. This is because in person, clear support and structure can really be offered as well as modelling and showing the child how best to use the skill being taught. For this age group, I aim to make my lessons as engaging and reward-based as possible. Positive encouragement and confidence building are key at this stage as well as repetition until the skill is learned. Finding fun ways to embed skills such as quizzing, competitive games and songs are just three examples of how content can be taught to this age group in a fun way. Building on spellings is really important at this age and this can be done either in the traditional read, cover, write way – or through activities such as finding the correct spellings on post-it notes around the room, etc.

For this age group, a 45 minute session of tutoring once a week would be more than enough. Also, the closer to the end of the school day the better, so that your child is not too tired to learn! Of course, I also offer English homework help to primary aged children.

As your child approaches their year six SATs, it is good to know that they would be in safe hands with me, as I can effectively prepare them for their English SATs. Reading, grammar and spelling are the key aspects which students are tested for in Year 6 and as a GCSE English teacher, all of these elements are included in my everyday teaching. Your children would be confident in answering the questions likely to appear in SATs papers and would go into the exam knowing what is expected of them.

If you have any further questions about how I could support your primary aged child, then please do get in touch (see the ‘contact me’ page).
